NAPAFAI is a small social enterprise specialized in fair trade organic cotton and working with women in village groups along the Mekong river and the Thai-Lao border .

It started in 2009 with the support of the Pattanarak Foundation, a thaï NGO, and under the organic cotton project .

I visited the group of cotton situated in small villages along the Mekong in the district of Ubon in Isaan region. Aew, the founder of Napafai, introduced me to the cotton growers, spinners, dyers  and weavers she had long relationships with .

IMG_5156Through this group of cotton, women gain access to trainings, equipment and materials . Members can also market their work and take part in a revolving credit fund .

I enjoyed very much learning about the cotton processing, but also visiting the organic cotton fields along the Mekong. Heritage varieties of cotton can thrive without chemical inputs . The cotton is planted on the banks of the Mekong after the highest flow recedes and is harvested before the next season’s rains .

I had the chance to see and to participate to the cotton harvesting with the group of cotton members .

Here you watch the video I made with Aew about Napafai and the group of cotton :

  1. Hello Eco Sourcing Project,
by chance do you have Napafai’s contacts (email)?

I’m volunteering for Discovered, a community that aims to link artisans with buyers from the Netherlands.

I hope to hear from you soon!

    Sofia 🙂

  2. Thank you very much for your interest in Napafai ! I’m very happy to see that my project could help this cooperative to gain a better market access, because that’s their main challenge. My contact is Napassak, the founder of Napafai:
You can also contact Ellen from Tammachat:
They are working with Napafai since few years as a buyer.
Let me know if you need any information!
    Best regards,
